Description
The number of deaf scientists and sign language users communicating in STEM fields in France is constantly increasing. However, this group faces a major obstacle due to the lack of a specific sign language lexicon. To solve this problem, we, as deaf scientists, founded STIM Sourd France, a non-profit organization in 2019. Our main goal is to create a network of deaf scientists and develop a French sign language lexicon for use in STEM fields. We organize workshops and seminars in collaboration with experts in science, education and linguistics to develop STEM-related signs. A protocol has been developed to enable experts to collaborate remotely or in person via a semi-autonomous management system including video recording to ensure efficient sign creation. A total of 1,046 signs has since been recorded and is shared on our website and social media channels. Our aim is to present our methodology for collecting and disseminating STEM-related signs, provide statistical information on participant demographics and explore the origins of these signs in more detail.
