David Birmbaum describes how DPN came to be while sitting inside the Merrill Learning Center. He starts in September 1987 during a meeting in which someone implied deaf people weren't ready to be administrators. That started a series of events like sending letters, having discussions, involving the media. He emphasizes that deaf people CAN. He focuses on the importance of media attention and how he called everyone he knew to get it started before Gallaudet took over the media.
