Abstract
Research into deaf persons' personal and intrafamily patterns began in the 1950s. This research, however, focused on the "problems of the deaf" rather than looking deeper. This has caused a focus in the literature on problems rather than looking into similarities between deaf and hearing people, there would have been different results. This thesis looks to answer several questions: What are the factors tobe considered when doing research on deaf populations? Are there differences in children's social and emotional development between the two populations? Do deaf children exhibit emotional or behavioral disorders different in type or frequency than comparable hearing populations? Are there diffferences in personality characteristics between the hearing and deaf populations? and are there differences in the type or frequency of psychopathological disorders in deaf population? This study reviewed previous research done by others in the field of mental health and deafness from 1937-1985. A structured interview was also established to gather information from professionals. The data gathered was compared and conclusions were drawn.
