Description
In this presentation, we will outline the development of the Irish Sign Language STEM glossary, which has been funded by Science Foundation Ireland (now Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland) since 2018 and has, to date, amassed almost 1,000 signs on its open access website. We develop our signs in a multidisciplinary team comprising teachers of the deaf, sign language linguists, scientists, a science communication expert, deaf community representatives and others. All team members are paid for their time on the project. We have gathered evaluation data from glossary users and stakeholders on the project functions, processes and outputs over the past six years and will share findings from these evaluations in this presentation. In 2018, following the pilot phase of our project, we developed a roadmap document describing the recommendations for the development of other glossary projects. In this presentation, we will discuss how we have built on this roadmap through constant self-evaluation and evolution within our own project.
