Description

This review systematically explored the literature on the interrelation between signed language and STEM learning to inform recommendations on advancing our understanding of producing STEM lexicon and discourse in signed language. This review addresses the challenge of developing and disseminating STEM-signed lexicons in education and professional spaces. Our research questions centered on the current understanding of STEM-signed lexicon production to identify potential pathways to reinforce the STEM lexicon in the classroom with deaf students and increase the representation of deaf professionals in STEM fields. The systematic review followed the approach taken by Mönch, C. & Markic, S. (2022) to establish criteria for filtering the literature. Over 200 pieces of literature were identified using various keywords in STEM education and signed language. The analysis is ongoing, and the preliminary findings showed an uptick in publication over the past decade, signifying the increase in research capital on exploring different facets of signed language in STEM learning space and professional careers. We will present the complete findings at the summit and recommendations for future work on the STEM lexicon in signed language.
