Description
The Research Laboratory at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, a 501(c)(3) organization, monitors a globally significant nesting beach for three threatened and endangered sea turtle species including leatherbacks, loggerheads, and green turtles. Because of our location in northern Palm Beach County, Florida, we are on the front lines of a changing climate and focus our research efforts on topics including human impacts, rising nest temperatures, sea level rise, beach erosion, and satellite tracking. Loggerhead Marinelife Center has one of the longest running sea turtle monitoring programs in the state of Florida, covering a 9.5-mile survey area from the northern Palm Beach County line south to the northern boundary of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. This stretch of beach annually hosts at least 50,000 sea turtle crawls from March–October. Data have been collected since 1979 through the morning and nightly survey programs, resulting in one of the most comprehensive sea turtle datasets in the world. Their dataset helps form conservation decisions to promote the recovery of sea turtle populations in Florida and worldwide.
