Description

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology offers a variety of STEM resources. Since the vocabularies of STEM disciplines do not often occur in the common vernacular of the ASL community, interpreters, teachers, and tutors are often forced to create technical signs for these words or concepts ad hoc, which may result in signs that lack both semantic accuracy and specificity. This could impede deaf and hard-of-hearing students’ ability to learn new information and acquire knowledge. NTID’s ASLCORE is a Deaf-centric project that includes some STEM content. The STEM Sign Video Dictionary includes technical signs for Lab Sciences, Math, and Information Technology. In addition to NTID’s ASLCORE resource, Khan Academy offers videos of ASL signs for math. In addition to the Sign Language Proficiency Interview, NTID has also created two new sign language assessments: the Fingerspelling and Numbers Comprehension Test and the American Sign Language Discrimination Test. Our presentation will also discuss how NTID supports faculty and staff to use STEM signs in the classroom through the Classroom Sign Language Assessment tool, which provides an analysis of faculty members’ ASL use in the classroom and includes suggestions for improvement.
