Description
Abstract In India, over 6 million people use Indian sign language (ISL), but less than 1% attend higher education due to limited accessible resources, underdeveloped ISL vocabulary, and poor STEM teaching in schools for the deaf. To address this issue and encourage deaf students to pursue STEM subjects, the ISL Enabled Virtual Laboratory Platform (ISLEVL) was created through a collaboration between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Haryana Welfare Society for Persons with Hearing and Speech Impairment (HWSPSHI). At the forefront of this activity is a team of deaf content creators, signers and multimedia editors who are mentored and nurtured by a team of hearing scientist, special educators, and interpreters to develop and implement the ISLEVL platform, which is accessible at http://islevl.org and also at https://jigyasa-csir.in/islevl-info/) The platform offers open access to high-quality STEM content translated into ISL, including comics, games, infographics, simulations, and videos, catered to different learning levels. The platform offers open access to high-quality STEM content translated into ISL, including comics, games, infographics, simulations, videos, ISL Astronomy Lab Virtual Module, ISL STEM vocabulary and NEWS catered to different learning levels. Deaf content creators and multimedia editors were mentored by a team of hearing scientists, special educators, and interpreters to develop and implement the platform, which can be accessed at https://islevl.org and https://jigyasa-csir.in/islevl-info/).
