Description
We present our work on building a uniform framework for integrating SL resources in STEM education. So far most efforts in Bulgaria have been focused on developing sign language dictionaries, including STEM and other specialised terminology. In parallel and independently, we have seen a boost in developing educational resources in sign language. Our current efforts aim at bridging the gap between lexical resources and educational practice. In particular, this necessitates addressing the following: (a) investigating how terms are used in context, especially newly invented or adopted terms, and what linguistic characteristics vary in usage compared to when presented in dictionary; (b) observing the way new terms are presented and acquired in educational settings and additional approaches to facilitate this; (c) developing integrated resources facilitating the use of a wider and richer sign language in educational setting, developing new learning opportunities for all fields of knowledge; (d) working on developing and promoting new educational approaches and methods, educating teachers and SEN teachers to use sign language and SL resources. STEM education is a priority in Bulgaria due to the low results and lack of educational opportunities for the Deaf in these fields.
